Maslak McLeodMaslak McLeod Gallery - Haida Prints

Haida Art in Canada is geographically designated. These are the artists of the West Coast from Alaska down through Vancouver into Washington State. The Haida peoples are the famous creators of the Totem Poles, highly articulated with fine design they follow a strict code of tradition. Some of the better known Haida artists are: Stan Hunt, Tony Hunt and Bill Reid.

The West Coast tradition of art permeates every aspect of the lives of the Native People of the Coastal Plain. (Haida, Tsimshin, Nootka, Bella Coola, Kwaquitl.) They decorated their clothing, utensils, furniture, boats, jewelery, baskets, and even their weapons. All are richly decorated in carving, colour, and sculpture. These are the people of the totem pole, the finely woven baskets and the colourful Chilkoot blanket wraps. The artform was resurrected by Bill Reid and welcomed back into the galleries of the world as an important artform, which reveal the social aspirations of a People. Reid might be compared with Morrisseau, in that, he re-established an entire way of seeing, a way of revealing the vital society of the West Coast Native. Today the art produced by these artists take the form of totems, prints, masks, bowls, baskets, clothing, jewelery, and architecture.
