Carl Beam
Born 1942
Ojibway, West Bay, Manitoulin Island, Canada.
Carl Beam has a very personal style. A hybrid of Northwest Coast and Woodland using western conventions such as graphics, photography and text. There are also allusions to computer grids and cartography. He uses acrylic, prints, ceramics, montage, phototransfer and collage and has created a style that has influenced artists such as Jane Ash Poitras and Cardinal. His subject matter deals with the relationships between Native culture and the 20th century white culture and technology. Carl BeamÕs work is an example of successful and interesting Post Modern art.
Carl Beam is an artist moving out of the Woodland School toward a strong depiction of the Native situation in North America. His work reflects a position of political awareness in a search, like the artist Hundertwasser, to discover a utopian understanding of the future.
All pieces have artist stamp.
