Maslak McLeodMaslak McLeod Gallery - Inuit Sculpture
Masters of Stone.

Our gallery specializes in Baker Lake, Dorset, Lake Harbour, a major group of Classic Period (1950 -1960) artists, including: Johnny Inukpuk, Lucassie Echalook, Lucy Tesseor, Audla Pee, Amatuk, Jessie Oonark and Sivuarapik. There is also an ongoing exhibit of current major artists: Floyd Kuptana, Newgealik, Parr, Henry Evardulark, Ohito Ashoona, Uriash, Kiawak Ashoona.

Inuit sculptors work in Serpentine stone, Basalt stone, Steatite stone, ossified Whalebone, Walrus and Narwhal ivory. Their Sculptures have been called "Stones that Move" and "Small Realnesses" The Inuit live above the tree-line in the Arctic Circle. Traditionally Nomadic, the Inuit began by carving small pieces that could be carried easily.

It was not until 1945 that these deeply traditional skills were recognized by the south. James Houston, an artist, traveled to the north and upon his urging exhibitions were organized in Montreal, Toronto and New York. A few of the original sculptors from this early period still work. A serious collector can still purchase classic early pieces by Henry Evaluardjuk, Johnny Inukpuk or Barnabus Arnasungaaq.

The art objects of the Inuit include limited edition prints, sculpture, stroud banners, baskets and original drawings. Their works are displayed in published books - Sculptures of The Inuit by Swinton and Lords of Stone published by Macduff and Galpin among others.
