We are also pleased to announce that Floyd Kuptana's artwork has been featured in the international Magazin Art, winter 07/08 edition, issue #78. The article discusses in detail a number of Kuptana sculptures currently featured at our gallery, including his impressively-sized Sedna.
Excerpts from Floyd Kuptana: Bridging Past and Future:
" [...] Kuptana's use of the bear/man transformation in Sedna Laments the Loss of Ice is particularly significant. In Inuit mythology, the Sedna/Nuliajuk/Taleelayu sea goddess is a most powerful being [...] Sedna embodies the idea of fertility, giver of life, symbol of abundance.
Kuptana's huge green and black steatite sculpture depicts her body on its back, her belly cradling an orange-yellow hide sail framed in sticks, bone oars, and a pink-eyed black stone figure with elongated limbs undulating like an octopuses' tentacles. In one hand, the creature holds a bone bow; in the other, a bone arrow. A hide bandanna hangs around his neck.
But it's the creature's faces that fascinate: the head is half bear, half man, the latter emerging from the bear's lower jaw. [...]As the large, round head of Sedna emerges into a "walrus" with its two bone tusks, decorative tuft of black horse hair and round metal eyes[...]"

Get out of the heat
We may well be in the midst of a golden age for Canadian Native Art. Canadian museums now have specific space set aside for the display of First Nations art. Visitors are seeking out an authentic Canadian art experience and by this they most often mean Indigena. Norval Morrisseau, the father of the Woodland School of Art, is the first Native Canadian to be given a solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, Ontario. The exhibition has now moved to the IAIA Museum, Santa Fe, New Mexico. The exhibit runs: June 15th to Sept. 3rd. Then the show will move to New York city. The catalogue exhibition - Norval Morrisseau is almost sold out - in a matter of six months - in less than half the time we expected. We would like to work with you to expand and enhance your collection.
We invite you to avail yourself of our expert and friendly staff.
All the best

Despite the national and international attention that Morrisseau has received, his work remains to be commercially attainable. We have works for viewing on our web-site, which is constantly being updated.
As a side note, a milestone was reached this week when Inuit artist, Joe Talirunili's The Boat People sold at auction at Waddington's at $240,000.In response to many questions we've received regarding buying and collecting Native art, here are some things to consider: The artist's local or international reputation, exhibition history, and representation in museums and/or major public auctions.
When buying a work of art, be sure to take your time, ask questions and take pleasure in your decision.On-going exhibitions: Birth Rites, by Morris Alorut. Inuit carvings depicting birth rituals.
