The Loss of an Icon - Remembering Norval Morrisseau
Norval Morrisseau, Canadian artist, died recently. Recognized as one of the major contributors to the world of art in the 20th century, Norval's work came out of a nearly forgotten civilization and led to the beginning of an understanding of the indigenous peoples of Canada.
His works stands as an exciting new vision of the iconography of the Anishanabe people. His creation of a singular style set him apart and his sense as a colorist is both impressive and wonderful.
Norval Morrisseau lived as a true original and his work reflects this fabulous self-actualization. He leaves a legacy of art and seven children, three of whom (Christian, David and Eugene) have burgeoning careers in art. The remaining four live close to the reserve in Northern Ontario where Norval was born. He is buried next to his wife Harriet Kakegamic.
