Arthur Lismer
"Art is a way of life. It is experience lived, shared and enjoyed. It is in the rhythm and order of nature..."
Arthur Lismer.
Maslak McLeod Gallery is proud to offer this rare oil on canvas painting by original Group of Seven member Arthur Lismer (1885-1969). Entitled Georgian Bay, it depicts a subject the artist returned to throughout his career.
Born in Sheffield, England in 1885, Lismer lived for a time in Belgium before emigrating to Canada in 1911, where he worked alongside McDonald, Carmichael, and Tom Thomson at the legendary Grip Limited commercial design house. He first painted Georgian Bay in 1913, when he took his family on a trip there to stay at Group of Seven patron Dr. James MacCallum’s cottage, and continued to paint views from the area throughout his career.
Dennis Reid writes of Lismer's Georgian Bay pictures, “It is only in the oil sketches that we can enjoy Lismer’s eccentric yet masterful use of colour..…The opalescent hues he discovered at the bottom of tidal pools drew him back again and again.”
The painting is in the gallery and available for viewing. It has impeccable provenance, coming through a single family. Please contact us to arrange an appointment, or to request more information.
