Observations: Another piece from the 'subway collection' (more information here), this painting dates from the early 1980s and strengthens Norval's commitment to portraying the Ojibwe people as meaningful, strong, and important. In this and other pieces from the period, Morrisseau was forging a new direction for Canada in its understanding of its first peoples. The piece is a mythological enlargement of native man - one foot is human, the other that of a bear, the spear appears to be morphing into a tree, and the figure's headdress has come alive as a bird.
