Observations: Surely the shaman, depicted here wearing a star and moon-encrusted hat, is a self-portrait. The multiplicity of his being is conveyed by the transformation of his arms and hands into birds and animals. Rather than being backgrounded by the sun, in this image he stands before a stylized turtle, the Ojibwe symbol of the world. This is Morrisseau in his true nature, man-shaman in a supernatural world. In this sense, supernatural meaning abundantly of nature, as opposed to transcending it.
