Observations: Jack Pollock's assistant, Khan, introduced Norval to the idea of 'Enkenkar' - an eastern philosophy that stressed the spirituality and interiority of man's life, and the spirit world. Man has the ability to transfer himself throughout the universe through his spirit. This is a portrait of transference. It also relates to the idea that life is more than physical - there is the soul, and just as importantly the imagination. The notion of Enkenkar was a validation of Norval's intuitive belief system, as well as proving to him that there is a shared understanding of spiritual ideas across diverse cultures. The reduced palette conveys an otherworldly sensibility, with the jewel tones of the greens and blues contrasting with the cloisonne-like black line drawing. There is an angelic aspect to the wispiness of the figures, whose totemic fusion of the heads of animals, birds, and humans relate them back the mythos of Norval's ancestors.
